Posad’s monastery is a textbook example. It doesn’t get any holier than
this in Russia, for the place was founded in 1340 by the country’s most

have been journeying here to pay homage to him. Sergiyev Posad grew in
the 15th century around one of the greatest of Russian monasteries, the
Trinity Lavra established by St. Sergius of Radonezh, still one of the
largest monasteries in Russia. Town status was granted to Sergiyev Posad
in 1742.
